Poem: On Watch
Original poem, written around 1965 as a play on Edgar Allan’s poem “The Raven”.
Once upon a mid-watch dreary as I pondered weak and weary over many monstrous volumes of the Nuky-Poo School lore As I nodded, nearly napping from the walls there came a rapping There came a most atrocious rapping from the steam pipe near the floor As I jerked out of my slumber and dialed the barracks check in number And said that all things were secure in these barrack I abhor. I thought again of my recruiter my great old U.S.N. recruiter That great old bull-shitting recruiter Re-enlist now? Never more ...
Found in an old notebook on an undated, faded sheet of paper. It was written with a mechanical pencil and capitalization and punctuation is as shown.
